The Tiji Festival, a thrilling annual event, takes center stage in Upper Mustang, a region of scenic allure that has captivated tourists for centuries. Initiated by Samdup Rabten Mustang in the 17th century, the festival saw kings from various districts converging in Lo Manthang to partake in a special ritual at the Chhode Monastery.
The Upper Mustang region, with its highest trek altitude reaching 3840 meters (12,598 feet) above sea level, serves as the backdrop for the Tiji Festival Trek. This captivating three-day celebration involves Tibetan rituals that narrate the myth of a son's quest to save the Mustang kingdom from impending destruction.
Monks, adorned in intricate costumes and masks, lead the festival's dances and rituals during Tiji, seeking to dispel evil spirits. Organized by the Choedhe Monastery, affiliated with the Sakya sect of Buddhism, the festival highlights the victory of God over Demon and Good over Evil.
The festival unfolds through a series of dance performances. On the first day, the 'Tsa Chaam' dance depicts the birth of 'Dorji Sonam,' a reincarnated Buddha confronting a harassing demon that plagued the Mustang kingdom. The 'NgaCham' dance on the second day portrays Dorjee Sonam attempting to return the demon to the Buddha realm. The final day witnesses the 'Rha Chham' dance, symbolizing Dorjee Sonam's triumph over the evil demon, banishing it from Mustang, and bringing peace and prosperity to the land.
Participation in the Tiji Festival Trek requires a special permit. The permit necessitates a minimum of two members in a group, and for solo travelers, arrangements can be made to join other groups. Original passport copies are essential for obtaining restricted area permits, making this journey a culturally rich and well-regulated adventure.
